『director of International Education at Northern Lights College. I have worked at Northern Lights College for more than 20 years in various roles. For the past seven years, I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in our International Education department. In July, I took over the role of director of international education.』
(1) How many Japanese students do you have? (ESL and post-secondary program)
In the September 2014 semester, we have 21 Japanese students out of 39 ESL students. Of the Japanese students, 18 will leave on Dec. 19. In the January semester, we expect a smaller number (13-15). In the March-June semester, the number is usually around 5. At this time, all of these students are in the ESL program; none are in the university-transfer programs.
(2) When will the summer term of ESL program starts in 2015 and how much does it cost? We also would like to be updated on the other fees including homestay-related fees for 2015.

The information on the “Where Do I Stay?” page is up-to-date. One clarification: students are provided with a private bedroom–they are not expected to share with another student or with host family children. The host family provides three meals a day. Often, students make their own breakfast and prepare their own lunch (leftovers, sandwiches, etc.), but the host family is responsible for buying the groceries for all meals as well as for preparing the evening (supper) meal. We do our best to not put two students from the same language group in one host family.
(3) When is the deadline for tuition payment and homestay fees?
If you are sending a group of students, we appreciate receiving the tuition as soon as possible after the applications are approved. Individual students are usually responsible for paying their host family the homestay fee on the first of each month. Alternatively, if you are sending a group, you can collect the entire amount (application fee of $100 per student, tuition, homestay deposits, homestay finding fee, students association fees, etc.), remit it to Northern Lights College, and then we will issue a cheque to the host families at the beginning of each month. Let’s talk about what arrangement would be most suitable!
