Grace Period

We consider our ESL program as variable length, meaning that students could study in the program for one to six quarters, depending on what suits their interest. If your student applies for ESL only (no college program), and studies for just 2 quarters, we would consider her to have completed her intended program. Her I-20 form will be shortened to the end date of her last quarter of study, and she would have a 60-day grace period.

We issue our I-20s with a year’s length. As long as your student completes their course with an attendance rate of 80% of higher, they will receive the 60 day grace period.
When a student cancels or curtails, they only get the 15 day grace period as they’re not completing their original course.

Because Taishu’s I-20 was issued for a full year, if he departs after only 3 months he grace period would 15 days. If he would decide to stay this full year, this would indicate ‘completion of program’ and his grace would be 60 days.
In general, if a student departs before their program of study is complete (as indicated on their Form I-20), their grace period is 15 days; a student departing upon completion of program the grace is generally 60 days.
An option is shorten the program from 12 months to 9 months, which would then allow the student the 60 day grace period. Please be aware that once the student exits the US after a ‘completion of program’ on the I-20 record, they will not be permitted to re-enter the US in F or J status if the program is finished. The I-20 includes the summer months as a possible vacation quarter that students are always eligible to take as a break – so, while it is assumed Taishu will study for 9 months, the I-20 will still have the remaining 3 months for summer break. Mr. Doug Raiford can ‘shorten’ Taishu’s I-20 to December 2015, which would show his program at 9 months exactly (studying spring/summer/fall) This would give Taishu the 60 day grace period.

Yes, she will still get a 60-day grace period when shortening her course. In terms of her I-20, she will be considered to complete a shorter course, rather than withdraw before finishing the original course.

Basically, student has to leave country within 15days after the student has finished his study.
However, if student’s I-20 form expired before few days earlier than student’s last school day, student can stay for 60days.
We issue 1, 3,6,9 and 12 months I-20 form. The reason usually we issue a longer I-20 form than their actual registered study period is that the most of students will extend their study once they have finished the first term and to avoid to waist time for the process for extending the I-20 form.

Regarding the grace period, I am attaching the followings for your reference.
1. How to reach college level English through MLI
2. Graduation requirements and certificate policy
As you can see, MLI provides two different certificates which are “Attendance” and “Completion”. If a student received the “Certificate of Completion” by MLI, she/he is eligible to have a 60-day grace period.
In order to receive the “Certificate of Completion”, a student must complete the Level 3 (Advanced) successfully then takes COMPASS TEST, scores at least into English 19 and English 21 at University of Hawaii Maui College Credit Side.

Grace Periods upon Completion of ELS Studies
60 Days: When students finish the complete ELS program (Level 112) and are ready to transfer to a degree program (for example, a bachelor’s program at university) or are ready to leave the United States, they have 60 days to either transfer or leave the country. (Note: some universities accept ELS Level 109/110, and the 60-day grace period applies.)
15 Days: When students are ready to return home, but they have not completed a “final” ELS level (for example, 112), they should leave the United States within 15 days of the completion of their studies. If they will transfer to another ELS Center or another language school, they must transfer to the next available start date at that Center. If the next start date is more than four weeks away, the student should remain with the ELS center to maintain full time enrollment for his or her status.

“If Mr. Matsui curtails his course at any time, his grace period will become 15 days, not 60.”
